Persons with Disabilities continue to live in extreme poverty wherever they are in the society, this is so given the unequal power relations witnessed in the society and emphasized by discrimination and negative myths associated with disability. With little or no access to education, discrimination on the grounds of disability in the job market, lack of access to credit facilities, infrastructural challenges, disability and the fact that majority of the disabled persons are born from poor families; a seed for extreme poverty is often sowed.

ANDY recognizes this challenge facing persons with disabilities thus the need to develop a program that will respond to the numerous challenges with an aim of empowering persons with disabilities primarily, targeting young people with disabilities.

Program Goal:

To economically empower youth with disabilities in realizing self- potential and reliance.

Program Objectives

  • To create a support mechanism for young disabled progressive entrepreneurs
  • To establish a micro-credit/ small grant facility that will support ventures by young disabled people
  • To be the leading development program for emerging young disabled entrepreneurs
  • To eradicate poverty levels witnessed amongst persons with disabilities in Kenya.

The International Youth Foundation project

This is a project under Economic Empowerment Project aimed at empowering young disabled people in rural Kenya through entrepreneurship skills and business support.

The project brings necessary support to a marginalized group of youth with disabilities living in rural areas to enable them come out of poverty by availing the skills and knowledge required to start and manage a small scale business. Youth with Disabilities in rural parts of Kenya lack opportunities for accessing financial support and knowledge of setting up small businesses; this result to them being neglected and discriminated against in mainstream development programs.
